OUR WHAT
This year, students will learn through participating in themed internships, sponsored by businesses found in our community. Each student will begin a unit taking on a role in a potential career path and explore the use of mathematics within that field. What better way to learn how math applies to the real world then really live it!?!
Each unit ends with a community outreach and "Planning for the Future" Page, providing the student multiple opportunities to not only reflect on their success on a specific math skill, but also how their learning may affect their future paths to better our Bloomington-Normal Community.

OUR WHY
Learning must be a purposeful experience for students. John Dewey felt all learning needed to be connected to the outside world. He argued content had little meaning if not connected to its real world application outside of the school system (Dewey, 1900, p.13). Therefore, Dewey challenged learning to encompass all subject areas.
To fully implement the ideals of Dewey's educational theory, Dewey demanded the effectiveness of his ideas would only be effective if the students, teachers, and society as a whole embraced its value.
Dewey’s theories on education and its connection to the outside world is a lacking area within the present educational field. Within our classroom, students will participate in mock internships, sponsored by local businesses, to learn and apply mathematical and language content. This method utilizes Curriculum, Creativity, and Connections to design purposeful learning experiences for students - Transforming Project Based Learning into Community Based Learning.
